Last Sunday the Highland Wildcats defeated the Edinburgh Wolves 54-8 to win the U19 Scottish Championship at the Bught Stadium in Inverness. In doing so the Wildcats organisation as a whole achieved a clean sweep of Championships with both Wildcats teams clinching titles.

Unlike in regular season games the pre game activities were a little different than normal. For a start both teams made team entrances. Also before the game the national anthem was performed by local singer song writer Emma Mitchell.

The hosts started off with a strong drive by the Wildcats offense which accumulated in Mark Pyper rushing 5 yards into the endzone for the opening touchdown of the game. The conversion attempt which followed was unsuccessful but it started off the onslaught.

The Wildcats defensive unit dominated the game early on. Defensive end Erem Demirel as a result of this recovered a fumble on only the second drive of the game to give the Wildcats the ball and the momentum.

Not long after the Wildcats doubled their lead when Euan Crawford threw a 28 yard passing touchdown to veteran reciever Ewan Sime. Unfortunately the extra point attempt after the play was incomplete.

Demirel then managed to recover yet another fumble shortly after the touchdown which put the Wolves straight back on the back foot.

Before the end of the first quarter Quarterback Euan Crawford scrambled out of the pocket and rushed 12 yards for a touchdown. The Extra Point attempt was no good but it meant that the Wildcats finished the quarter with a dominat 18 point lead.

At the start of the second quarter the Wildcats continued to score with Euan Crawford throwing an 18 yard passing touchdown to Mark Pyper. The PAT was no good but it didn’t matter due to the lead.

The Wildcats didn’t have it all there own way in the second quarter as the Wolves defense rallied and DB Maldon Duck managed to get an interception.

Unfortunately for Edinburgh immediately after this Harris Ryalls got an interception which he took to the house for a touchdown. The Wildcats offense then managed to convert a touchdown for the first time in the game when Corin Robinson stepped up to score 2 Extra points. This increased the score to 32-0 to the home favourites.

Following the touchdown the Wolves fumbled the ball once more and this time it was recovered by Stephen McMeechan. It then didn’t take long for the home team to use the possession as they scored another touchdown. This was scored by Mark Pyper on a 5 yard run. The touchdown was then converted by Euan Crawford who took the ball to the house.

This was the final score of the half and the Wildcats were now 40-0 ahead.

During the half time break the youth Wildcats were presented with the Britbowl trophy and the MVP for the tournament (Stephen McMeechan) was awarded the Britbowl MVP. The presentation party for this included myself and Gary Lee representing the British American Football Association.

After the half time break the game started to tighten up as the Edinburgh Wolves defensive pack started to contain the Wildcats. They then started to make some big plays including an interception from Ross Hunter.

The Wolves couldn’t do much with the ball and this resulted in a quick series of downs and a punt. When the Wildcats got the ball they madebthe most of it and Euan Crawford stepped up and threw a 42 yard touchdown pass to reciever Declan Maclennan. The touchdown was then converted by Crawford once more who found Erem Demirel in the endzone.  This put the Wildcats 48-0 up going into the final quarter.

Now playing for pride the Edinburgh Wolves rallied once more and finally made a break through when QB Liam Brown scrambled for a 3 yard rushing touchdown. This was then converted leaving the score at 48-8.

The Wildcats defense then sealed the Wolves fate when Haris Ryalls once more intercepted brown before taking it into the endzone for another puck six. This left the score at final whistle 54-8 to the Wildcats.

Immediately after the game Graham Ross (councilor for the council ward of Inverness West) awarded the trophies to the the Wildcats and Wolves. Quarterback Euan Crawford was selected as the MVP and was awarded a trophy of his own.

The new Blitz was then officially opened after the presentation by Graham Ross to round off a great day for the Highland Wildcats.
